The grant-chaser’s quiet Monday morning

The notification arrives at 7am on a Monday. joris has finished its weekly scan of the funding landscape. The Delivery is ready.

The Routine that owns the watching

Sarah runs a community centre in a market town. A lunch club for older people, a youth group on Thursdays, a warm space in winter. The boiler is an anxiety dream in cast iron. Her title is Centre Manager. Her real job is everything: bookings, safeguarding, rotas, and the funding spreadsheet that lives in a folder called Funding 2026 FINAL (3).xlsx.

She inherited the spreadsheet from the previous manager. Nobody else wanted it. It has fourteen tabs. The tab called “Websites to Check” has a list of URLs, half of which return 404 errors.

The overhead of grant searching is not the writing. It is the remembering to check.

A Routine never writes an application. It cannot fill in a budget. But it can take on the watching — the recurring job that has no natural owner in an organisation of one.

You set it once. You name the funders. The Tudor Trust. The Wolfson Foundation. The National Lottery Community Fund. Your local council’s grants team. You write a Direction that tells joris what matters: “new funding rounds, rule changes, consultation openings.”

joris searches the web at run time. It reads the pages it finds. It pulls out what changed.

A Monday morning Delivery looks like this:

Every funder is named. Changes carry a signal tag — FUNDING for a new round, RULE for a criteria shift. Quiet funders sit in a group at the bottom, deliberately visible. You dismiss the rounds you already knew about. The next run keeps them off the page. What stays is what matters.

The quiet funders

“No change” can feel like noise in a document that is meant to surface the new. It is the opposite. The hardest question in small charity fundraising is not “What should I apply for?” It is “Have I missed anything?”

A quiet funder this week is the answer: you have not. That is a real signal. It earns its place in the Delivery because it lets you close the week knowing the landscape is stable.

Over time the list gets quieter. The funders that never move fall away as you stop needing to check them. What remains is the small set of entities where something happens when it happens, and you know about it within a day of the website updating.

Try it yourself

Start with your five most important funders. Name them in the Direction. Open the Competitor & Market Watch template — the FUNDING and RULE signal tags map directly to what a grant-chaser needs. Schedule it for Sunday evening or Monday morning. You have 14 days free to see what settles. The second Delivery is always better than the first: it has learned what to ignore.

Là où ça cesse d'être le bon outil

Not every funder lives on the open web. A foundation that announces grants through a quarterly PDF newsletter? A local authority portal locked behind a login? joris cannot see inside those. And the Routine does not remember your grant history — that context lives in your notes. If you have a full-time grants officer and a proper CRM, this is a supplement, not a replacement.
