The house needs a weekly decision, not another chore list

At 9:12 on Saturday morning, Leila is standing in the hallway holding a dead smoke-alarm battery, a damp towel and the letter that needs signing before Monday. None of these jobs is difficult. That is why they keep slipping.

The household job nobody owns

Most household task lists fail because they describe the entire house.

A list like “clean the bathroom” or “sort the cupboard” gives every job equal weight, even though some can wait until next month and one is about to become a problem.

Leila’s Routine has a narrower job: every Friday at 6pm, choose the small set of household jobs that deserve attention before Sunday night.

It does not manage the home or know what has been completed. It owns the weekly decision about what is worth remembering.

One Delivery, ready for Saturday

Set it up as a plain markdown Routine running weekly, Friday at 6pm in the household’s time zone.

The Delivery contains a short priority heading, up to five selected jobs, the room or area for each one, why it belongs this week, what is needed, an estimated order, a “leave for later” section and one question that lets the next run adapt.

The useful part is the selection. The Routine is allowed to leave things out.

The Routine remembers the boring parts

Household systems decay because somebody has to maintain the system. A job is skipped once and then disappears forever.

A Routine keeps its own notes, its last five Deliveries and a compacted summary of older history. Leila can say that the smoke-alarm battery was replaced, the herb pots are no longer part of the routine, or the extractor fan needs a professional.

The next Delivery adapts. Repeatedly dismissed jobs stop competing with the things that actually matter, while tasks she keeps checking remain part of the household’s rhythm.

The shape of a good week

The point is not to finish every task.

A good Friday Delivery gives Leila a boundary. The smoke-alarm battery is not mixed in with “sort the scarves”. The school bag has a reason and a place in the sequence. The cupboard can remain disorganised without feeling like a failure.

The household still needs doing, but the recurring question—what actually deserves attention this weekend?—has an owner.

# Household reset · Saturday 8 August

## Do these first

1. **Replace the hallway smoke-alarm battery**
   - Area: Hallway
   - Why this week: The alarm is already showing a low-battery warning.
   - Need: One 9V battery from the maintenance cupboard.
   - Order: First, before other jobs.

2. **Check school bag and Monday clothing**
   - Area: Child’s room
   - Why this week: Clear the Sunday-evening scramble.
   - Need: School bag, sports kit, shoes, Monday clothes.
   - Order: Do while the laundry is being folded.

## Leave for later

- Sort the winter scarves.
- Wipe the tops of the kitchen cupboards.
- Reorganise the maintenance cupboard.

## For next time

Tell me which of these was completed, skipped, or no longer belongs in the rotation.

Wo das aufhört, das richtige Werkzeug zu sein

Keep the list small. If the Routine produces twelve jobs, it has become the thing Leila was trying to avoid.
